Getting Forced into Civil Engineering or Ocean Courses

First, the Rules:

I UNDERSTAND THAT:

   (a) FORCE REQUESTS ARE FILLED ON A CONDITIONAL BASIS ONLY. Being forced into a class does not guarantee you a seat in the class even after we force you in, nor does it guarantee you a seat in that section of the class. It is possible that after we force you into a class, a graduating senior will put in a force request for that class and we may then have no choice but to force them into that seat. In this case you can be assured that we will make every effort to get you into some other class that you need. This isn't too common, and may not seem fair to you until you become the graduating senior, at which time you will understand perfectly. Regardless, do not put in a force request unless you understand and accept this condition.

More common is having to change your section number. It is quite common that after we force you into a class in a given section, we get a later request which can only fit into that section. You should then expect that we may move you to another section which also fits your schedule. We understand that you may not like the new schedule, or the new professor, but it still may be necessary in order to get both of you into the class.

    (b) I WILL NOT BE NOTIFIED regarding the status of my force requests. The reason that we cannot notify you individually is that there are several hundred of you. Thus it is absolutely up to you to see if we were able to add the courses you requested.

   (c) IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY to check http://myrecord.tamu.edu to determine if the proper courses have been added to or dropped from my schedule.

   (d) I WILL NOT CALL OR COME BY THE DEPARTMENT AND ASK ABOUT THE STATUS OF MY REQUEST. The department is working diligently to process your request, and to see if additional courses can, or should be added, but this takes time. Coming by and asking if we are finished only delays the process, and will get you nothing but an ugly glare. Please see http://myrecord.tamu.edu and you will know everything that we know, as soon as we know it. Note that we cannot get into the system to process force requests before open registration begins so it will be after that before we can even begin to process your request.

   (e) For courses other than Civil Engineering: The Civil Engineering Department can force you into the following courses only: CVEN and OCEN. We are unable to force you into MEEN, PHYS, ENGR, ENGL, POLS, MATH, etc. You MUST go to the department which teaches those courses to be forced into their classes. Click here or here for where to go or who to call to be forced into these classes.

   (f) You MUST, absolutely MUST check your schedule before classes begin to see if the courses added/dropped were what you actually wanted.

The following is a true word-for-word request: "I have already submited <sic> a force request for this class. I am sending this again because I am worried that I would be kicked out of the 307 section I am currently in if one of my force requests are met and not be forced into this section. I didn't put that I needed this class this semester to graduate on time on the first one since i <sic> had said section 502 only. I don't need 502 to graduate on time but i <sic> do need 307 next fall (Fall 05) to graduate on time since I am taking a course that requries <sic> haveing <sic> taken 307 next spring and it is only offered durring <sic> the spring semester. Sorry about this, hopefully everything will work out."

This leads to great confusion about what in the world you actually want. You are the only person who can tell if you like your final schedule, and whether the courses are correct, and we hold you fully responsible for checking their final accuracy.

   (g) Course requests are handled in the following order:

    (h) You can check the status of your request about 72 hours after it has been submitted (sometimes sooner, sometimes later) by going to the following web site:

http://cenotes.tamu.edu/ForceTools/ForceListStudent.asp.

You will be asked to enter your information exactly as you entered it on the request form, so remember them. If your name does not come up at this web site after 72 hours then we did not receive your request. Try again and this time don't use your first name as your last name, don't give us the wrong UIN, don't give us jerkboy@tamue.du for your email address when it is  jerkboy@tamu.edu, don't misspell your last name, etc. If your request comes up with a blank Comments field, or "Your request is pending" appears, that means we received your request and are working on it but have not yet completed it. Once we have finished processing your request, you will get a note in the Comments field that either says "Course added: " or "Class is full" or other explanation of why we were unable to accommodate your request.

    (i) If we are able to accommodate your request, you MUST then go to http://myrecord.tamu.edu to verify that what we did is indeed what you requested. Any errors must immediately be brought to our attention by emailing Lowery@tamu.edu or calling Dr. Lowery at 979-845-4395. Please take this seriously, because if we accidentally force you into MATH601, you will end up using one of your Q's to get out of it once you finally notice it on your schedule.

    (j) Please note that if you wish to modify your request at any time, simply submit a revised request to replace your previous request. On the revised request, in the field "Explain in detail why you wish to be forced ", please put "Discard previous CVEN 342 Request." or whatever the old request pertained to, then add whatever other comments you wish. We will then delete your previous requests for that course and only consider your latest request. For later revisions, simply put "Revised Request 3", etc.

    (k) If you ask us to force you into a course that is not offered that semester, like CVEN303 Section 504 in the summer, we will discard the request and reply with "Course not offered", since we don't know if you want CVEN303 section 504 in the Fall, or CVEN303 section 300 in the summer.

Second, the Procedure:

If after reading all of the above you still wish to be forced into a closed section of CVEN, or OCEN, please click here and fill in one request form for each course. Please note that we run degree audits and otherwise carefully check your reasons for requesting forces.
